Eligibility Criteria of Indian Foreign Service (IFS) Exam

The Indian Foreign Service (IFS) Exam is a highly competitive examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to recruit candidates for the prestigious Indian Foreign Service.

The IFS is the main diplomatic service of India, and its officers are responsible for representing the country abroad, handling its external affairs, and promoting its interests globally.

The UPSC Civil Services Exam consists of three stages: Preliminary, Mains, and Interview. The Preliminary exam is a screening test that consists of two objective papers: General Studies and CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test).

The candidates who qualify for the Preliminary exam are eligible to appear for the main exam, which consists of nine descriptive papers: one essay paper, four general studies papers, two optional papers, and two language papers.

The candidates who qualify for the Mains exam are called for the Interview, which is a personality test that assesses the suitability of the candidates for the service.

The eligibility criteria for the IFS exam are as follows:

Number one is, Nationality, Only Indian citizens are eligible to apply for the IFS Exam. Candidates who are subjects of neighboring countries such as Nepal or Bhutan may also be eligible, provided they have obtained the necessary permits from the Indian government.

Age Limit is also very important for eligibility, the minimum age required to appear for the IFS Exam is 21 years, and the maximum age is 32 years.

There are certain relaxations in the upper age limit for candidates from specific categories, such as SC/ST, OBC, and government servants.

There is also age relaxation for candidates belonging to certain categories as follows:

  1. Up to 5 years for SC/ST candidates
  2. Up to 3 years for OBC candidates
  3. Up to 5 years for candidates from Jammu and Kashmir
  4. Up to 5 years for Defence Services personnel
  5. Up to 5 years for Ex-servicemen
  6. Up to 10 years for Persons with Benchmark Disability and up to 10 years for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) candidates.

The number of Attempts also matters, Candidates can appear for the IFS Exam a maximum of six times for general category candidates, nine times for OBC category candidates, and unlimited attempts for SC/ST category candidates.

Also, a candidate must have at least a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university to be eligible.

There are no specific subject requirements, which means that candidates from any field can apply for the IFS Exam.
