What is Defense Services Exams?

The Defense Services Exams are a series of competitive exams conducted by the Indian government to select candidates for various defense services such as the Army, Navy, and Air Force. These exams are highly prestigious and attract a large number of applicants every year.

Types of Defense Services Exams:

Combined Defense Services (CDS): This exam is conducted twice a year to recruit candidates for the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Air Force Academy (AFA), and Officers’ Training Academy (OTA). Candidates who have completed their graduation can apply for this exam.

Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT): AFCAT is conducted by the Indian Air Force for the selection of officers in the Flying, Ground Duty (Technical), and Ground Duty (Non-Technical) branches.

The AFCAT exam is held twice a year, usually in February and August. The exam consists of an online test of 100 questions, covering topics like General Awareness, Verbal Ability, Numerical Ability, Reasoning, and Military Aptitude.

National Defense Academy (NDA): This exam is conducted twice a year, in April and September. It is open to unmarried male candidates between the ages of 16.5 and 19.5 years who have passed Class 12 or are appearing for Class 12 in the Science stream. The exam consists of two written papers: Mathematics and General Ability Test. Selected candidates are admitted into the National Defense Academy (NDA) in Pune or the Naval Academy in Ezhimala for a four-year training program.

Territorial Army Officers Exam: This exam is conducted by the Indian Army for recruitment into the Territorial Army, which is a part-time citizen’s army. Graduates between the ages of 18 and 42 are eligible to apply.

Process of Selection:

Written Exam: The written exam for Defense Services Exams consists of objective-type questions from various subjects, including Mathematics, English, General Knowledge, and Science. The difficulty level of the exam is high, and candidates need to be well-prepared to score well.

SSB Interview: If you qualify in the written exam, you are called for the SSB interview. The SSB interview is a five-day process that assesses your physical fitness, mental aptitude, and leadership qualities.

Medical Examination: If you qualify in the SSB interview, you are called for a medical examination. The medical examination is conducted to ensure that you are physically fit to serve in the Armed Forces.

Mathematics is an important subject in all Defense Services Exams. You should have a strong foundation in Mathematics and be able to solve complex problems quickly and accurately.

English is another important subject in all Defense Services Exams. You should have a good command of English grammar and vocabulary. General Knowledge is a wide-ranging subject that covers a variety of topics, including history, geography, current affairs, and science.
